Advice #10: Health Insurance in Ecuador.

iessDear readers,

Long time since I post anything. So many things happening.

Im about ‘to start building at the Ecuadorian Beach.   I found a place with awesome view for a good price!

There is something very important that I need to talk about.

How you can get insurance in Ecuador?

By Ecuadorian law, anybody can join the Gov social security. That means, health attention, medicines, surgeries, urgent medical atention.

The social security is known by IESS Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social. (Social Security Ecuadorian Institute) This Gov ofice is not interested in making money, the Ecuadorian Gov wants to protect people. That means anybody with legal residence in Ecuador.

I was told by a Dr that he thinks IESS is great. The only thing that he does not likes is it takes a long time for a medical appointment and you need to call to the Call Center to get it. He said, surgeries, medicine and retired plan are great.

IESS cover 100% (no deductibles) in any medical atention, medicines or surgeries.

Coverage after the 3th month, there is not a time that you cant use it for emergency situations. IESS covers prexistent conditions.  Again, Ecuadorian Gov wants to protect people.

Here is something that I have to say: The IESS says they want to cover everybody at anytime . But also they say if someone gets the insurance in knowledge they have preexistent condition, they will ask for the money back. The money that was used for medicine, hospital, etc..

There is not age limit. After 40 years old they require you to get a medical examination before you  get the insurance. They say they want to be ready with medicine. I never had heard someone did not get  coverage.

I will like to be very clear about this, because everybody needs protection.

There is 3 ways to join the IESS:

1-Work for someone in some company. Any company, does not matter if is little store or a big one as Walmart. (we dont have Walmart, but I mencionted just for a example)

2-Join it as  your free will (you go to the IESS office fill out a form and you ask the insurance for yourself)

3-Join it as a self employed. For example: I sell Avon products, I sell shoes to a store (that qualifies as self employed).

-In the first case the employer pays a fee as a support of the employee. And the employee pays his/her fee

-In the 2nd case the person who is interested at the insurance pays a personal fee.

-In the 3rd one the person pays two fees: As employer and as employee. This allows you ask for credit at some point.

IESS gives retirement to the people when they have 35 years of fee payments.

But here is something, they have plans for seniors.  A person who is 55 years old can ask for retirement after 10 years. That is for people who is in productive life (I mean people who has a job)

There are many things that I need to explain to you. I will do it in the next post if you have any questions.

My english is getting better. I need to learn more words and increase my vocabulary.

I want to thank you for reading my blog and share this information with your family, friends and anybody who is interested at be an expat!

Who I am?

Hey Guys!!

I have been thinking you that you guys are thinking: Who is this girl and why she takes time offering this information?

I am 34 years old, and married a gringo.

We have been living in Cuenca for almost two years.

My Husband was in Cuenca before me, He has lived almost 4 years in Ecuador.

I decided start writing this blog because I saw many misinformation when my Husband was trying get his visa. The attorney who was taking care the paperwork was telling lies and asking money. He was taking advantage of my Husband because he does not speak spanish.

Finally we got my husbands visa by ourselves, without any attorney. And also we were refunded some money from lawyer..

Few months later we came to the beach  to find a property and we were dissapointed.. Sometimes because people were overpricing or because people are asking money under the table as a government employee more than 2 times the rate for a signature to approve the survey in one case.

I don’t ask any money to nobody when they ask for suggestions.

But, I will like to earn some money if someone needs professional services:

Translations.

Paperwork for Visa application.

Please, share this blog with friends and family, so everybody can be prepare when they come to Ecuador.

I can guarantee your satisfaction to reduce hassle and wasting time and money.

God bless!

Advice #9: Real Estate Investing in Ecuador.

Hello everybody!!

My Husband and I have been riding around the beach and asking about properties. We been finding many people who owns land, dont has any paperwork of it.

We have been in:

Salinas.

Montañita.

Olon.

San José.

Puerto Rico.

Rio Chico.

Ayangue.

Ayampe.

Las Tunas.

Puerto Lopez.

Machalilla.

Puerto Cayo.

Curia.

We found a 1000m2 land in Puerto Lopez for 120k. This is by the board walk.

A house with 6 beds for 130k. This is by the board walk.

A not finished house 180m2 in a lote of 1000m2 for 200k. This is on a hill, ocean overlooking.

DSCF1014

A lote of 250m2 for $3500. A 300m distance from the beach.

A lote of 500m2 beach overlooking but not paperwork. The “Owner” said he is overthere since 1959 and the lote is a heritance from his parents in law.

In Ecuador, if someone finds a land and nobody is overthere can build a house for X time and become the “Owner” of it. If the real Owner shows up they must go to the Court. Is little complex, I been looking the law in order to show you guys, so you can be prepare when you find a house or land and you like it.

Please check here: “Ley de tierras baldías y Colonización”

http://www.darwinnet.org/docs/tenencia_legalizacion.pdf

Is important the seller shows you all the paperwork. It includes:

Escritura (Means the tittle)

Historia de Posesion (Means a list of owners of the property)

Certificado de No Gravamen ( This is a document it shows no has any debt, the owner is not using the property to get credits from any source, so nobody can take it from you)

Pago Impuesto Predial (This is the fee receipt payment. With this doc you can see who is the Owner, the tittle from the Municipality and the record of the legal paperwork)

My suggestion is: ask for all this doc, not just one. Just because you need be sure how and where you are spending your money, even if is little money.

If you buy a property and it does not has paperwork, and you dont know any local person, you dont speak the language and also dont know the culture, you will loose your money.

The first time that I met the gentelman who is now my Husband, he was working in his ecuadorian visa. The lawyer who was taking care of it, was no honest. I catch him telling lies and asking money. I founded out when I was verfiying information by asking the gov oficce.

Finally we got my Husband visa without lawyers, by ourselves. The lawyer gave his money back (not with out struging) Its not easy, but also is not complex. Everybody can do it.

So, my botton line is: Always, always, always ask for paperwork and ask someonelses opinion. If someone wants take advance of you, you will find the true by speaking with local people.

Usually they are friendly and are glad to speak and talk to people.

I hope you find this information usefull, and if you do please share the link with your friends 🙂

I will be glad to answer any question that you can have and share my experience wit you.
